WHY IS SOMEONE ALWAYS IN CHARGE? Children's experience of life, and indeed most people's experience is that there's always someone in power; someone who makes the decisions; someone who doesn't usually have to ask us what we think before they act. But is it as simple as this? This workshop uses roleplays to consider how political power works, and explores the question of what it means to be 'in charge', looking at different examples from around the world, and exploring in depth the UK system of government.
Through talk, interactive games and online investigation, pupils will:
- examine their current assumptions about how government works
- explore some different models of government
- look at some examples of governments being in or out of control
- think about who can stop governments from making particular decisions, or persuade governments to make them
- engage critically with the idea of the social contract
- learn some useful terms that will help them interpret political stories in the media
- role-play as people in power, and deal with different situations that face governments
All students need is curiosity, and some experience of living under a government.

Who is it for?
It's for all students 7-14, but we also do a special "stretching" version for students identified as gifted.

What's the relevance to the curriculum?
This workshop is most strongly relevant to the Citizenship curriculum, but also deals with historical examples, which can be chosen from the relevant key stage's history curriculum.

Where does it happen and when?
It happens in your school, either as a face-to-face session, or as an e-mail roleplay.
There are a few different options, but the important thing is that you set the schedule. You don't have to fit in with specific dates or struggle with clashes.
See the menu on the right for all the options.

How do I book?
Simply email tim@findthewhy.com or call 077 9960 8220 (leave a message if I'm teaching). I will find out all the information I need from you and we can organise a date that works.
See the menu on the right for all the options.

Why does the gifted option cost? This sort of thing used to be free for London state schools...
Did you know that the funding model has changed for gifted and talented students in London? Before, the money was given to a company (LGT) that provided free resources. Now the money is going direct to schools for them to spend on a wider range of programmes. Ask your headteacher about funds available for gifted students.
