WHY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION FOR CHILDREN. It's possible to get a long distance exploring the 'how', 'what', 'when' and 'who' of subjects, but you get to the heart of the matter by asking why. Our INSET session allows teachers to explore the differences between these different types of questions and to consider the benefits of finding the why. You can also start to adapt our methods for teaching your own students.

We will explore:
  • how to extract a why question from a subject
  • how to make why questions meaningful
  • how to devise activities that help students understand more abstract ideas
  • the definition of theory, hypothesis and speculation in different subject contexts
  • why not all whys are the same
All teachers have experience of asking questions to help students learn. This session will add a bit of rigour to the system.

rule

Who is it for?

It's for teachers of students aged 7-14, and we can also deliver a version informed by our experience with very able students, who sometimes want to explore the most complex and abstract questions.

rule

What's the relevance to the curriculum?

This INSET can be adapted to think expressly about a particular curriculum area, or to be cross-curricular, as it deals with an approach.

rule

Where does it happen and when?

It happens in your school, as a face-to-face session.

There are a few different options, but the important thing is that you set the schedule. You don't have to fit in with specific dates or struggle with clashes.

See the menu on the right for all the options.
