Young Gifted and Talented Accredited Provider TRUE THINGS ARE THINGS THAT YOU KNOW ARE TRUE. But how do you know that true things are really true? How many truths are there, and how many things that we believe can be demonstrated, evidenced, or proven? This programme helps students bring more rigour to their reasoning process and enables them to start thinking philosophically about all the many truth-claims they hear around them every day, whether that's adverts, news stories or strange superstitions.

Through talk, interactive games and online investigation, pupils will:
  • consider what their standards are when it comes to accepting something as truth
  • explore how to prove a truth
  • discover what they base their ideas of truth on
  • play games with truth and deception, to see how people can believe different things
  • consider how much truth depends on perspective, and whether that applies to all truth-claims, or not.
  • learn sophisticated concepts like "epistemology".
All they need is to be in a thoughtful mood, and to have a bit of experience of telling the truth (and perhaps the opposite!).

rule

Who is it for?

It's for all students 7-14, but we also do a special "stretching" version for students identified as gifted.

rule

What's the relevance to the curriculum?

This topic crosses all curriculum subjects but is particularly relevant to the key skill of research. Our examples are drawn from history, science and citizenship topics.

rule

Where does it happen and when?

It happens in your school, either as a face-to-face session or as online interaction (which means that students can also work at home on it if they have the right ICT access).

There are a few different options, but the important thing is that you set the schedule. You don't have to fit in with specific dates or struggle with clashes.

See the menu on the right for all the options.

rule

How do I book?

Simply email tim@findthewhy.com or call 077 9960 8220 (leave a message if I'm teaching). I will find out all the information I need from you and we can organise a date that works.

See the menu on the right for all the options.

Why does the gifted option cost? This sort of thing used to be free for London state schools...

Did you know that the funding model has changed for gifted and talented students in London? Before, the money was given to a company (LGT) that provided free resources. Now the money is going direct to schools for them to spend on a wider range of programmes. Ask your headteacher about funds available for gifted students.
