DO WORDS MEAN WHAT WE THINK THEY MEAN? What does it mean to mean something? This programme will take your students into new realms of literacy, exploring both the philosophy and facts behind how words work.
Through talk, interactive games and online investigation, pupils will:
- think about what it means to mean
- explore the histories and composition of their favourite words
- understand how to break down new vocabulary into its component parts
- play games with words and meaning to find out more about their relationship
- get the tools to create new words that sound 'official'
- learn sophisticated new concepts like 'denotation', 'connotation' and spelling shift.
- use an etymological dictionary
All they need is a sharp pencil, a pretty sharp mind, and a bit of experience of using the English Language.
Who is it for?
It's for all students 7-14, but we also do a special "stretching" version for students identified as gifted.
What's the relevance to the curriculum?
This programme takes the word-level objectives of the National Literacy Strategy as its starting point. There are also links to history (we go right back to the Romans in our thinking about language) and to research skills (the students do their own research, supported by the tutor).
Where does it happen and when?
It happens in your school, either as a face-to-face session or as online interaction (which means that students can also work at home on it if they have the right ICT access).
There are a few different options, but the important thing is that you set the schedule. You don't have to fit in with specific dates or struggle with clashes.

Why does the gifted option cost? This sort of thing used to be free for London state schools...
Did you know that the funding model has changed for gifted and talented students in London? Before, the money was given to a company (LGT) that provided free resources. Now the money is going direct to schools for them to spend on a wider range of programmes. Ask your headteacher about funds available for gifted students.

A live visit by a tutor to your school, for £20 per student, minimum 20 students, maximum 40 - all levels of ability.

Gifted students, in school
A live visit by a tutor to your school, for £30 per student, minimum 8 students, maximum 15 - aimed at students identified as gifted.

The whole class, by email/web
A tutor interacts with your class over a month, for £350 flat rate - all levels of ability.

Gifted/personalised programme, by email
A tutor interacts personally with a small group of students via a teacher-monitored email account over a month, for £20 per student - aimed at students with high ICT competence.

Videoconference taster
A tutor interacts personally with a group of students via Global Leap, the subscription video conference service. Open to Global Leap subscribers only.
